From the Pink Truck to Parkwood: Don Que’s Southern BBQ Finds a New Home

If you’ve spent any time around Altama Avenue on a Sunday or attended a community event like First Friday, chances are you’ve come across Don Que’s Southern BBQ. That bright pink food truck made its mark on Brunswick, serving up plates packed with flavor.

Over the past year and a half, the truck became known for its tender ribs, rich specials, and presence at neighborhood gatherings. Now, the food truck that became a local favorite has found a new homeat 2700 Parkwood Drive, offering that same unmistakable taste in a space you can visit any day of the week.

For owner and pitmaster Quamine Haywood, known to most as Que, this isn’t just a move indoors. It’s the next step in a journey fueled by focus, hard work, and heart.

From Miami to Brunswick, Always in the Kitchen

Originally from Miami, Que grew up surrounded by his brothers and the need to stay motivated. “We always were hustlers,” he says. “We sold candy, CDs, and DVDs when we were in elementary school… we were always go-getters.”

When his family moved to Brunswick, he had to adjust to a slower pace—but his work ethic didn’t change. “We just went to school and played football and got a job and just went with the flow.”

Throughout it all, cooking was always close by. “I always just had a drive of having my own restaurant, even when I was small,” he said. “I cooked my first meal when I was like eight years old.”

A Decade of Experience in Local Kitchens

Que’s first job was at Popeye’s while he was still in high school. From there, he went on to spend nearly a decade as pitmaster at Southern Soul BBQ before working in kitchens across the Golden Isles.

“I worked at Palmer’s Village Café, I worked at Iguanas, I worked at Outback that was on the island,” he says. “I worked at The Porch. I also hopped to other restaurants while I was still working—just to get a feeling of different restaurants.”

While building his experience in the kitchen, Que also took culinary arts courses from the College of Coastal Georgia. “I was going to Coastal as I was working at Southern Soul,” he shared. The education and hands-on experience helped him shape the vision for his own business.

Where It All Started: The Pink Truck

Don Que’s Southern BBQ began under a tent in front of a friend’s mother’s house. After setting up outside City Gear on Altama Avenue, the buzz started building.

“One day I got rained out,” Que recalls. “I was like, forget this—I ain’t about to get rained out no more. So I got a food truck.”

The truck, wrapped in bold pink, quickly became part of Brunswick’s culinary landscape. His grand opening on the last Sunday of the year evolved into a regular event—the Last Sunday Food Truck & Vendor Pop-Up, where other vendors joined in for what became a monthly celebration of food and community.

“I had invited vendors out, and other vendors kept coming because they did good,” he said. “It was just a good vibe.”

While the truck doesn’t set up on Altama anymore, Que hears from customers who still look for it. “A lot of people say, ‘I’m looking for that pink truck on Altama,’ and I tell ’em, I’m right here now.”

The restaurant is open:

  • Monday–Friday from 11 AM to 8 PM

  • Saturday from 12 PM to 8 PM

Que is looking to add Sunday hours in the near future. “I’m a person that likes to eat a good Sunday meal,” he says. “I’m dedicated to a good Sunday meal.”

He’s also introducing breakfast service soon, Monday through Friday from 5:30 AM to 10:30 AM, with a new morning menu already planned.

Customer Favorites

Que’s loyal customers already know to come early for the specials. “My specials go crazy. And my ribs go crazy,” he says. “I sold 40 plates on Oxtail Sunday and 15 ribs. The specials always go crazy because you can only get that one day. But my ribs, they my best seller. I sold 396 plates so far this year.”

Still Rolling with the Community

While the pink truck isn’t out every week, Que is still hitting the events that matter. “I do First Friday,” he says. “I actually have an event this Saturday. I’m going to stay engaged with all the community events for sure.”

A Message for the Community

When asked how the community can best support him, Que’s answer is honest—and humble.

“I don’t care for the support just because,” he says. “I want people to buy the food because they love it.”

That love is clear the moment you step through the doors. During our visit, customers came and went with plates in hand and smiles on their faces. The atmosphere was full of warmth, laughter, and familiar faces—exactly the kind of energy Que pours into his food.

“You put pride in your food, you put a smile in your food,” he says. “You’ll get it back.”
